This recipe has been in my family for a few generations. My sister had a life long best bud named Mary Jane and Mary Jane had a Grandma Parson's who liked to bake.
These chewy cookies are loaded with fruit and nuts so they have been on my Christmas cookie tray for many years.
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup soft butter
2 cups light brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup chopped nuts, I like walnuts
1 cup halved Maraschino cherries
2 cups chopped dates
Sift together: flour, soda, salt, set aside.
Cream: butter, brown sugar, eggs.
Mix til light and fluffy.
Add alternately the flour and buttermilk.
Stir in dates, nuts, cherries.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 12 to 14 minutes.
Note: if you don't have buttermilk, don't fret. To the 1/2 cup milk, add 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice or 1/2 teaspoon white vinegar prior to adding to the recipe.
